Rules of the day

This page explains how KidCommit decides whether your child’s phone is open or closed during the day, and what bonus time changes. It covers school days, free days, bedtime, extra closed windows, holidays, and bonus time.

School days and free days

KidCommit has two kinds of days: school days and free days. You pick which weekdays are school days.

Each kind of day has its own bedtime. Each kind can also have extra closed windows, such as school hours.

Example: you mark Monday through Friday as school days. School days can have one bedtime and school-hour closed windows; free days can have a different bedtime.

Bedtime and extra closed windows

Bedtime is the window when the phone is closed. Extra closed windows also close the phone at times you set.

During a closed window, limited apps are blocked. Apps that are not limited stay open.

You choose which apps are limited: ticked apps are limited, unticked apps stay open. On Android, a new app starts out limited until you untick it.

What a closed window does to earning

During a closed window, earning is closed. Your child cannot start a puzzle, an episode, or a chore.

Work already started is not interrupted. A chore your child started before the window can be finished. An episode test they already started can be reopened during the window, but a new one cannot be started. A puzzle they already started can be finished in the first ten minutes of the window, or in the first ten minutes after a bonus that ends in the middle of a window.

A closed window changes whether new earning can start. It does not erase minutes your child already has.

Holidays

Holidays are date ranges chosen in a calendar. The start date and end date are both included.

Days inside a holiday count as free days, even if the weekday would normally be a school day.

Example: if you set a holiday from Monday through Wednesday, all three of those days use your child’s free day rules. The calendar is being very literal, which is sometimes useful in a house full of humans.

Bonus time

You can give 5 to 120 minutes of bonus at any moment, in steps of 5.

Bonus time is a window on the clock. Limited apps open, and your child’s own minutes are not spent while the bonus is running.

Bonus time also lifts a closed window. You can end it early.

Saving schedule changes

The schedule saves itself. There is no Save button.

If you change school days, free days, bedtime, extra closed windows, or holidays, KidCommit saves the schedule without another step. One fewer button to wonder about.
